Removing grout requires a tool that can fit into the narrow grout lines and abrade away the material without touching the tile edges. A grout saw is designed for this task, with a narrow edge (often carbide or a serrated blade) that you drag along the joints to chip out the grout to the desired depth. This lets you regrout or replace damaged tiles cleanly. Other tools aren’t suitable for this job: a trowel is for applying or smoothing grout, not removing it; a cold chisel is too aggressive and can chip or damage tiles; a circular saw would cut into tiles and grout and isn’t precise for joint work.
